NEWSWELL offers comprehensive wraparound services, business planning and professional training to our local newsrooms, helping them build sustainable business models that focus on and serve their communities.

Brittney Butler
Program Manager, Development, Grants and Operations

BRITTNEY BUTLER

Program Manager, Development, Grants and Operations

Brittney Butler is a global and public health professional with extensive experience transforming data into compelling narratives concerning social determinants of health.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science from the University of California, San Francisco. Her research and translational science work spans health economics and policy, including conducting cost-effectiveness analyses of health interventions in rural Nepal, analyzing the real-time impact of COVID-19 on communities of color in the United States and investigating the effects of prescribed fires on vulnerable populations in California. At Meta’s Data for Good initiative, Brittney managed global partnerships and collaborated with international organizations like the United Nations and World Health Organization to craft impactful case studies illustrating how movement data informs and optimizes real-time humanitarian aid efforts.

A common thread in Brittney’s work is her unwavering commitment to uplifting underserved communities. Across all her roles, she has mobilized grassroots efforts and engaged diverse stakeholders, fostering collaborative partnerships to drive transformative and enduring improvements in community health.

Nicole Carroll
Executive Director

NICOLE CARROLL

Executive Director

Nicole Carroll is executive director of NEWSWELL and a professor of practice at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She is an alumna of the Cronkite School and an inductee to its Hall of Fame. Carroll has more than three decades of journalism experience and a track record of success in leading newsrooms. As top editor of The Arizona Republic, where she spent almost 20 years, Carroll led a project on the proposed U.S. border wall that won a 2018 Pulitzer Prize. She also led breaking news coverage recognized as Pulitzer Prize finalists in 2012 and 2014. Carroll was named editor-in-chief of USA Today in 2018. That same year, she was named the Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year by the National Press Foundation. After serving as top editor at USA TODAY for five years, Carroll joined ASU Media Enterprise to establish NEWSWELL and help transform local news. Carroll is a member of the Pulitzer Prize board and hosts its Pulitzer on the Road podcast. She earned her master’s degree from Georgetown University in 1996 and her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Arizona State University in 1991.

VENITA HAWTHORNE JAMES

Director, Student Experience

Venita Hawthorne James has spent most of her career at the intersection of local news and people development. In various editing and executive roles at The Arizona Republic, she oversaw the expansion of suburban bureaus, launched new community papers and websites in the regions surrounding Phoenix and ran the breaking news operation. She developed emerging and experienced journalists, initiating and launching a journalists-in-training program on foundational work. She took that experience to the journalism faculty at the vaunted Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. There, Hawthorne James helped develop and launch a civility course, worked as a director in the Cronkite News program in Phoenix and as a managing editor for the Carnegie-Knight News 21 multimedia project. She also taught beginning and intermediate reporting and writing to first-year students as well as sophomore, junior and graduate students. 

Leonard
Director, Operations and Transformation

CHRISTINA LEONARD

Director, Operations and Transformation

Christina Leonard is the director of operations and transformation at NEWSWELL. She joined the nonprofit in August 2024 after spending a decade at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication as a professor of practice. Previously, she served as the executive editor of Cronkite News, the student-produced news division of Arizona PBS, and of News21, a national investigative project headquartered at the Cronkite School. She also oversaw the Reynolds Business Bureau at Cronkite News. Leonard joined the Cronkite School after 17 years as a reporter and editor for The Arizona Republic. Her leadership roles included serving as state and county political editor, assistant business editor and editor-in-chief of two business magazines, Arizona Woman and bizAZ. She serves as the faculty adviser for the ASU student chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association, and she has served in numerous leadership roles in the AAJA professional chapter in Arizona. Leonard graduated with a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from ASU. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Oklahoma.  

Sapna Satagopan
Director, Product and Innovation

SAPNA SATAGOPAN

Director, Product and Innovation

As director of product and innovation, Sapna Satagopan works across NEWSWELL properties and ASU centers and schools to grow and engage users of our news products while advancing innovative projects that propel the industry forward. Satagopan was most recently the senior director of product at CalMatters. Satagopan believes in democratizing access to the news and in building impactful news products. Prior to CalMatters, she co-founded Xyza: News for Kids, a subscription news platform for young readers. Her professional career began in technology consulting, followed by roles in strategy, research, and consumer insights at digital and branding agencies. Satagopan has an MBA from UC Davis along with degrees in Physics and Linguistics.

Director, Investigative Journalism Ventures

JOSH SUSONG

Director, Investigative Journalism Ventures

Josh Susong is director of investigative journalism ventures, working to help our local newsrooms seek accountability in their communities. He came to NEWSWELL from USA TODAY, where he was senior editor for enterprise, overseeing national correspondents and leading investigative narrative reporting. A graduate of University of Southern California, he worked at the Los Angeles Times and the San Jose Mercury News, then spent 16 years as an editor at The Arizona Republic, where he led the news staff and the investigative, data and storytelling teams. He was the lead content editor for the newsroom’s report on the proposed border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, a project that won the Pulitzer Prize. He has also been a contributing editor for three other projects selected as Pulitzer finalists, and edited stories that won top honors from Scripps Howard, SPJ and other awards.

B.J. TERHUNE

Managing Editor, California

A veteran editor and newsroom manager, B.J. Terhune previously worked at the Los Angeles Times, where she was assistant managing editor for news. She created and led a department that covered breaking news and trending topics. Her team was among the L.A. Times staff recognized as a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2023 for breaking news, and she has shared in two other Pulitzers in that category. She also has worked at the Orange County Register, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Orlando Sentinel, among other news organizations. Terhune is an alumna of Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida, where she is also a member of the Advisory Council for the College of Journalism and Communications.

JULIA THOMPSON

Director, Audience and Membership

Julia Thompson is the director of audience and membership at NEWSWELL. She is also a professor of practice and Cronkite News managing editor of digital at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. 

She has worked in newsrooms as a senior editor and digital director, including at USA TODAY, The Arizona Republic, Des Moines Register and Tallahassee Democrat. At The Arizona Republic, Thompson was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team for explanatory reporting on the proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall. 

Thompson also served as the city of Mesa’s first chief digital officer and holds bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from the University of Missouri.

Dean, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU

Battinto L. Batts Jr. is dean and professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, an award-winning journalist and educator with deep experience in philanthropy and nonprofit administration. He recently served as director of journalism strategies for the Scripps Howard Foundation in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Batts holds a doctorate in higher education management from Hampton University, a master’s degree in media management from Norfolk State University and a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Executive Director of Advancement, West Coast, ASU Foundation

Pete Ragias serves as ASU Foundation to ASU Foundation for a New American University’s Executive Director of Advancement, West Coast. In this capacity, Ragias leads fundraising and constituent engagement efforts across Washington state, Oregon, and California in support of ASU’s Charter:

ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.

A native Californian, Ragias resides in San Francisco and received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and his master’s degree from Harvard University.

MERIDITH RENTZ

Chief Enterprise Partners Officer

Meridith L. Rentz was named chief enterprise partners officer of ASU Enterprise Partners in 2024 and provides the company, its business units and centers of excellence with strategic leadership. ASU Enterprise Partners provides the operational services for NEWSWELL properties. Rentz has more than 30 years of nonprofit and higher education experience. Previously, Rentz was vice president of global development for EARTH University and executive director of EARTH University Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that provides philanthropic support for EARTH University. EARTH is a private, nonprofit, international university based in Costa Rica, that supports students from more than 40 countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Her previous experience includes serving as chief operating officer and chief of staff for Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, CEO and president of MedShare International, chief administrative officer for Emory University’s Department of Internal Medicine and a consultant in Deloitte’s Healthcare Strategy and Operations practice. Rentz was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, and a Woodruff Fellow at Emory University where she received her MBA and master of public health degrees.

JACQUELINE SMITH

Senior Vice President, ASU Foundation

Jacqueline Smith is senior vice president at the ASU Foundation for a New American University where she designs opportunities for presidential level prospects and organizational funders to invest in Arizona State University as a New American University. She also enhances ASU’s competitiveness for “big bet” and moonshot funding opportunities. Smith manages the Presidential Advancement, Moonshot and Science Philanthropy, Corporate Philanthropy and Foundation Development teams.

Smith is also a professor of practice in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College with a focus on university design and higher education and the law. She has also taught an undergraduate course called Cross Sector Collaboration, which is offered to students in the Next Generation Service Corps, a program she helped design.  

She earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics and her law degree from Georgetown University.

LISA LOO

Senior Vice President and General Counsel , ASU

Lisa Loo was appointed ASU’s senior vice president and general counsel in 2022. Loo was in private practice prior to joining the university in 1993. Loo is an elected member of the American Law Institute and has an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. She is a Fellows member of the American Bar Foundation and of the Arizona Legal Services and Education Foundation. She served on the Executive Council of the National Conference of Bar Presidents from 2017-2020 and served as president of the State Bar of Arizona from 2016-17. The State Bar of Arizona recognized Loo in 2008 for Outstanding Achievement in Advancing Equal Opportunity in the Profession and as the 1993 Outstanding Young Lawyer. Loo is a founding board member of the Arizona Asian American Bar Association and has served, and continues to serve, on the boards of several community organizations. She obtained her law degree from the University of Virginia in 1985, and her undergraduate degree from Fordham University in 1982.

MORGAN R. OLSEN

Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, ASU

Morgan R. Olsen is ASU’s chief business and financial officer and holds an appointment as professor of practice in the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education. Olsen’s responsibilities at ASU include overseeing treasury and financial functions, capital projects, real estate, facilities operations, human resources, police, environmental health and safety, information technology and business and auxiliary services at the university’s four campuses.

Olsen came to ASU in 2008 from Purdue University, where he served as executive vice president and treasurer. He previously served at Southern Methodist University as vice president for business and finance, Eastern Illinois University as vice president for business affairs and treasurer and associate professor in the college student personnel program, and as vice president for fiscal affairs at Emporia State University in Kansas.

Olsen earned a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of North Dakota, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Olsen earned a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Kansas.

Managing Director, ASU Media Enterprise 

Mi-Ai Parrish leads Arizona State University Media Enterprise and is the Professor for Media Innovation and Leadership at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She is president and CEO of MAP Strategies Group, based in Phoenix. Parrish served as president and publisher of The Arizona Republic/AZCentral.com and market president at USA TODAY Network, where the team won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting. Prior to The Arizona Republic/USA Today Network, Parrish held similar leadership roles at the Kansas City Star, and (Boise) Idaho Statesman, and an array of newsroom roles at (Minneapolis) Star-Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. Parrish was the first Korean American publisher in mainstream media, first BIPOC publisher in Idaho, Kansas City and Phoenix, and first woman publisher in Kansas City. She continues work in diversity and inclusion in media, the weaponization of information, and coverage of justice and equity. She is the chairwoman of Poynter Institute Board of Directors, vice-chairwoman of Banner Foundation Board of Directors, secretary of Greater Phoenix Leadership, and serves on the boards of the Associated Press, Common Sense Media, the O’Connor Institute for American Democracy, The 19th* News, Arizona Community Foundation, and others. She holds a Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Arizona PBS is a member-supported community service of ASU. With four broadcast channels and an array of digital platforms, the station fosters lifelong learning across Arizona, delivering news, science, arts and children’s programming to nearly 2 million households a week.

Cronkite Agency
The Cronkite School’s Cronkite Agency serves clients with a range of strategic communication services, including digital marketing, public relations and brand content. Students gain real experience in digital advertising, media relations, SEO, social media strategy, and media analytics and more.

Future Tense
Future Tense is a DC-based ASU project with New America and Slate magazine that explores the impact of technology on society. As a “Citizen’s Guide to the Future,” it is committed to a democratic governance of science and technology to ensure a more equitable future.

Global Sport Matters
Global Sport Matters is the media enterprise brought to you by the Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University. We are a purpose driven publication that provides a platform for in-depth insights on a diverse range of sports topics informed by data and research.

ICT
ICT is an independent, nonprofit news enterprise that serves Indigenous communities. We reach audiences through our digital platform, ICTnews.org, and a half-hour, weekday broadcast, “ICT Newscast with Aliyah Chavez.” ICT is owned by IndiJ Public Media, an Arizona 501 (c)(3) public charity. IndiJ Public Media honors our ancestors and future generations through stories that make Indigenous peoples come alive.

Issues in Science and Technology
Issues in Science & Technology, a partnership with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, is a print and digital journal that explores the policy and social aspects of new science, technology, and medicine.

KBAQ
KBACH 89.5 FM is a Phoenix public radio station that plays classical music 24/7 in partnership with ASU. The station is supported by listeners through membership.

Leonardo
The ASU-Leonardo Initiative drives innovation at the intersection of arts, sciences and technology. As an enterprising think tank, Leonardo integrates hybrid, creative inquiry and practice as a catalyst to solve problems, explore timeless mysteries, and shape a finer future.

Narrative Storytelling Initiative
Building a community of skilled writers and storytellers, the Narrative Storytelling Initiative works with expert faculty and promising narrators to develop compelling writing, high-impact transdisciplinary research and original media projects.

NEWSWELL
NEWSWELL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and strengthening local news outlets. While the outlets concentrate on delivering quality community-focused news and resources, NEWSWELL focuses on improving business services and strategy as well as partnering with media organizations on innovations to advance and transform local news.

Transformations
An online magazine that features narrative essays and other content, is published by the Narrative Storytelling Initiative at Arizona State University and is a publishing channel of the Los Angeles Review of Books. This media project is dedicated to featuring knowledgeable narrators and expanding the quality and impact of their public engagement.

Zócalo Public Square
The nonprofit Zócalo Public Square publishes humanities journalism and convenes events with the mission of connecting people and ideas. Founded in LA in 2003, Zócalo operates a syndicate of 290 media outlets worldwide to create a public square where democratic discussion can flourish.
