At NEWSWELL, we believe learning isn’t limited to the classroom – it’s a lifelong pursuit.
Education is woven into everything we do. Through paid internships, newsroom partnerships, research collaborations and career development programs, we’re expanding access to journalism and helping local news thrive.
This summer and fall, we’re offering paid internships at two of our affiliated newsrooms: Times of San Diego and Stocktonia. We also hire interns to work on product, innovation and investigative reporting projects.
To date, NEWSWELL and its affiliates have trained 16 students. The program is built around mentorship, coaching plans and preparation for careers in a fast-changing media landscape.
Meet one of those interns, Tessa Balc – a standout reporting intern at Times of San Diego. From day one, Tessa has jumped into the newsroom with curiosity and drive – and in this video, she shares what she’s learning and how the experience is shaping her path in journalism.
We partner with Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, one of the most respected journalism schools in the country. Cronkite students intern with our editors, receive university credit and contribute directly to our reporting – including through national projects like the Carnegie-Knight News21 initiative.
We’ve also hired interns from schools in our local communities, including San Diego State University, Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and Delta Community College in Stockton.
